Vulvodynia

There are two things you should know about Vulvodynia:

1. You are not alone!

2. Sex does not have to be painful!

Millions of women, of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, suffer from chronic vulvar pain. Symptoms can include burning, stinging, stabbing, irritation and rawness; pain may be intermittent or constant. The actual cause of Vulvodynia has not been found yet, but it is known that it is NOT caused by an active infection or sexually transmitted disease.

Diagnosis can be made after taking a medical history and answering questions about your symptoms, followed by a careful examination of the vulva, vagina and vaginal secretions to rule out an active infection or skin disorder. A cotton-tipped applicator may be touched to areas of the vulva to determine the location and severity of pain. A special instrument might be used to help your provider examine it more closely and some biopsies may be taken of the area.

There is no one treatment for every person affected by Vulvodynia. It is possible that it will take several visits to find a combination of treatments that will alleviate your pain.

If you think you might suffer from Vulvodynia, make your appointment today!
